A note from the founder:

I started Hawaiian Roots in 2001 after I noticed that there were not many resources online for researching genealogy in Hawaii. The site received a great response from the public when it first launched and now, I’ve made it a goal to turn Hawaiian Roots into a non-profit organization so that it may continue to help those trying to piece together their own family history.

Many people start researching family histories because it is necessary to have documentation for things like scholarships and DHHL, but I’ve always found genealogy to be a fun hobby and it also gives a sense of personal pride.

Like many multi-cultural families in Hawaii, my own roots are Hawaiian, but also include Chinese and Portuguese ancestors. Hawaiian-Roots.com is meant to help people with all races that make up Hawaii’s melting pot of people.

About Hawaiian Roots Blog
The blog specifically covers Hawaii history with a focus on the Hawaiian race, the land, culture and some current events. It is meant to be informative, unbiased and bring to light important history that most people may not have heard about, so I hope you enjoy learning about Hawaiian history as much as I do. If anyone has old stories to share from your kupuna, or would like to contribute, please contact me via the ‘contact’ form.

Hawaiian-Roots.com is recognized by the State of Hawaii as a non-profit organization.

We understand the importance of family history, and want to help as many people as possible to learn more about their Hawaii families, whether they were Japanese immigrants, British contractors or Hawaiian ancestors–we have helped them all. Therefore, Hawaiian Roots will begin helping with family research projects up to two hours long, for a minimum donation of $25 (includes domestic mailing/copying fees). The money will be put back toward the organization to continue helping others.

Services may include finding supporting documents through newspaper archives, immigrant ship manifests, certificates of Hawaiian birth and vital records through the Hawaii State Archives, Hawaii State Library, BYU Family History Centers and others. On completion, you will receive all research notes and copies of documents found.

Projects will be put on a wait-list basis, so contact Christine Hitt at christine4056@gmail.com for further information. At this time, Hawaiian Roots’ status is as a nonprofit organization with the State of Hawaii. We are in the process of filing for a 501(c)3 with the IRS, so donations are not tax-deductible at this time. Updates to follow.
